The Mac Place
Driving slowly
Along the winding mountain road
To my amazement
I found the turn with ease
Down Mud Cut road
Turning at the fork on to Sugar Hill-Old Fort Road
Gradually the land rises up on the right.

There it is
Or there it was.
Then it was an old house.
Six children born there
Growing up.

Now, it is a worn path
Rock steps cut into the hillside
The house replaced by boxwood, grown with love
And tended carefully so long ago.

Across the road, across the valley
The Mac place is still there.
The apple trees are gone now.
The mountain remains.

The creek that rose so high
During The Flood
Still cuts its way down by the house
Where Maw-Granny washed clothes.

Those that lived here are gone,
Moved away or died.
The mountain will remember
Long after the heirs are gone.
The mountains are forever.

Missing You
I saw your brother today
An old man went into the store and
Bought him a beer.
He waited in the driver's seat
Eagerly taking the bottle from the old man.
Will he finally finish school this year?
He is the basketball star
You were the poet.

I thought of you today.
I could only sit and cry.

The Only Sunshine Here In Awhile

You will never know her
You will never see her brilliance
Her beautiful smile,
The light in her eyes.
You will never have the chance to hear her voice.
There are only shadows of her now.
Traits of her seen in others.

A beautiful rose,
Cut before full bloom.
The other buds quivered and cried; shocked,
The blossoms shook.
Added to the beautiful bouquet
Saved for a special day.

She will never know your sadness
And
You will never know her.

October
Golden leaves falling
Fires burning
A crispness in the night air
Smells of cinnamon and apples
People raking, breezes blowing
Couples walking hand-in-hand
Bales of hay
Yellow dogs romping
Warm, red sunsets
Big, blood-red moon
Jack-o-lanterns appearing
Apple bobbing
Witches arriving
Little goblins coming to the door
Fall is here, winter's on the way.

Jessica's Swing

She rises
Her blond hair flows out
Behind her
She swings back
Then forward
Without caring.

Not thinking about the future
And all the promise that it holds
She didn't know
The 5-year old scaredy-cat
The growny 8-year old
Or the frightened 11-year old
Who ran away.

When I look into her future
I am afraid.
Very soon she will
Stand alone.
Alone on a path
With many detours
And tempting shortcuts.
There will be many
Bumps and ruts ahead.

I will wait
To guide her
To comfort her.
The choices will be hers.
She swings on and on.

Ein Junge und ein Mädchen

Ein Junge und ein Mädchen
War sprechen
Er sagt, "Ich liebe dich"
Sie sagt, "Zeigt das zu mich."
Er küßt das Mädchen.

Dann sie dachten vielleicht wir brauchen
Mehr zeit zusammen.
Sie sagt "Ich muß gehen
Kommst du mit mir?"
"Nein, ich stehe hier."

A boy and a girl

A boy and a girl
Were talking
He said, "I love you"
She said, "Show that to me"
He kissed the girl.

Then they thought maybe we need
more time together.
She said, "I must go
Will you come with me?"
"No, I am staying here."

A Real Castle

A great house
Rises up to touch the Asheville sky.
It's Gothic beauty
Pales in comparison to the mountains
Surrounding it.

Walking through the stone corridors
Brings awe.
It is filled with antiques
To marvel over.
Many people would feel it is too museum-like and cold,
But to me it could be home.

Sweeping

She stands alone
Sweeping silently
Ignored
By all who pass
Too busy to take
Time to speak
One they believe inferior.

She continues
Day after day.
Time passes,
Aging her
Making her even more invisible.
A broomstraw for every year,
A straw for every fear.

The Eyes On The Shelf

Bubbles and Bumble, Goochy and Goatee
All looking at me.
I wish I could take
Them all home for free.

Princess and Peace
Prance and Prickles
Pumkin' and Puffer
Are pleasing to me.

Nuts and Nanook,
Bernie and Batty
I thought them so nifty,
I could have bought fifty.

Fortune the panda
Bought on E-Bay from Amanda.
Fetch the Golden Retriever
I just couldn't leave her

Valentina is my latest addition
Like her brother, Valentino,
who is also in my collection.

Peking, Peanut, and Pinky
have all been retired
Impossible to find
Unless they're pirated.

At the end of the year
All will be retired by Ty
So now is a good time
to buy, buy, buy!

For Laura

Goodbye my friend, you have served me well.
You showed me how you danced every night
In the grove of sycamore trees.
You showed the way.
You did everything for me
That I could not do for myself
I feel the bond between us
Growing more and more distant.
Soon I know that I will be unable
To call for you at all.
Goodbye my friend
It is time for you to leave
To go back to that grave
To the Black Lodge that
You came from.
Your time was over
I should have seen,
I didn't want to admit it.
Thank you for the strength you gave me,
But now I must manage on my own.

Stitches

The sheet grabbed me, like the monster under the bed.
Pulling me down to where it lay.
A child's piercing scream
Filled my ears. Red all over me.

You stood there with the light behind you.
Telling me to stop.
Like a guardian angel,
But I didn't heed your warning.

You wouldn't come
Left alone
In the sun room
With all the light; darkness behind
Figures moving all around.

Moving down the corridor
At a super fast speed
I see you, I reach for you,
Then I'm pulled back.
It is over.
You come for me
And take me home.

Off Beat

You led the way,
But I couldn't follow
You didn't wait
I lingered.

Now I am able to follow
You have gone on
Without me
I am alone

While we are both free
We should try
So that we can forget
And no longer regret.

Now we are both free
But I guess it is not to be
Star-crossed lovers
I have discovered.
